Local students sign up to become the Sport Makers of North Lincolnshire

Over a hundred new sports volunteers have signed up to become the Sport Makers of North Lincolnshire. Sport Makers is an initiative which aims to inspire 700 people in the Humber to get involved in sports volunteering within the local sports community. Sport Makers will commit to at least 10 hours organising or leading sporting activities. The initiative is open to anyone aged 16 and over so potential sports volunteers of all ages have the opportunity to become involved during the run up to the 2012 Olympics.
Sport Makers is part of the Places People Play legacy programme that is bringing the magic of a home Olympic and Paralympic Games into communities across the country and is an opportunity for everyone who’d like to make sport happen for their friends, neighbours or colleagues.
A Sport Makers Convention was held at North  Lindsey College  before Christmas and over a hundred students attended this event from both North Lindsey and John  Leggott College .
At the event they participated in informal and interactive workshops where they learned more about volunteering and gained awareness of opportunities to get involved in sport in North Lincolnshire . The Sportmakers programme offers a fantastic opportunity for local clubs and sports organisations to recruit new volunteers and the students at the event had an opportunity to discover potential voluntary opportunities from these organizations and North Lincolnshire Council.
Alan Rayment from North Lindsey College  is a Sportmakers Facilitator. Alan, a Para-Triathlete is promoting the Sportmakers across the Humber and was delighted by the success of the event in Scunthorpe
“I believe it was a great success, our students enjoyed the event, we look forward to Sport Makers making a difference in their community. The students learned about volunteering at the event and some of these students will become involved in College events associated with the Olympics and Paralympics. Some of these activities could bring families into the College as part of the Olympic celebrations”
Gary Hood Director of the Humber Sports Partnership said “Sports Makers is an inspirational national scheme that will help to support clubs and major events in the Humber over the coming years.  This will be part of the Olympic legacy that makes a difference to local people. The Humber Sports Partnership has a lot of partners who are on board with the program, including professional clubs, colleges, business and Local Authorities.  The real benefactors will be the Sports Makers themselves as they assist our local clubs to become stronger and our sporting communities have fun and succeed. The experience of becoming a Sports Maker is as exciting and rewarding as helping our community clubs to thrive and grow.”
It is easy to get involved in the project. Potential volunteers just need to register at www.sportmakers.co.uk  and the Humber Sports Partnership will be able assist you from here. Clubs are also able to publicise voluntary opportunities through this website.
