WHILE the arrival of the O2 Touch programme has helped take
rugby activity into the summer months, on Humberside the
demand extends through the winter, especially among the
student fraternity, as the recent Annual RFU HE/FE Touch Rugby
Competition at the University of Hull underlined. The competition
was held in partnership with the University of Hull Campus Sport
Programme and the Rugby Football Union.

The touch initiative is aimed at making this fun-filled, socially
driven game available to all local HE/FE institutions and to help
increase participation and awareness of the sport in the wider
Humberside region.

The 13-team entry was a 50% increase on last year’s numbers
and included Higher Education sides from both the University
of Hull Campus and Scarborough Campus, alongside Further
Education teams from as far as East Riding College in Bridlington,
Norton College in Malton and more locally Hull College, Wyke
College and St Mary’s Sixth Form.

The competition was eventually won by Wyke College who beat
Hull College 3-0 in the final. Greg Bone, RFU Community Rugby
Coach, said: “It was great to see some of the colleges we have been
working with from across the East Riding enjoying a competitive
outlet. The use of the 3G pitches was ideal for the time of year.”
Scarlet Sutcliffe, Sports Activity Co-ordinator at the University of
Hull, said: “Competitions like these are great for the FE sides
to come along to the University campus and play in a competitive
environment. It also gives them an insight into the types of
sporting activity they can get involved in if they go on to study at
the University of Hull.”

The Humber Sports Partnership has launched the search for hundreds new sports volunteers to become the Sport Makers of North East Lincolnshire.

Sport Makers is an initiative which aims to inspire 700 people in the Humber Yorkshire to get involved in sports volunteering within the local sports community. Sport Makers will commit to at least 10 hours organising or leading sporting activities. The initiative is open to anyone aged 16 and over so potential sports volunteers of all ages have the opportunity to become involved during the run up to the 2012 Olympics.

Sport Makers is part of the Places People Play legacy programme that is bringing the magic of a home Olympic and Paralympic Games into communities across the country and is an opportunity for everyone who’d like to make sport happen for their friends, neighbours or colleagues.

Every Sport Maker will be invited to an informal and interactive workshop where they’ll gain the skills and opportunities to get involved in sport in The Humber. Sport Makers will be introduced to organisations that need their help, and join forces with others who want to make sport happen locally. There’ll also be opportunities to meet top athletes and plenty of incentives to stay involved.

A Sport Makers Convention is being held between 1 -4 pm at Grimsby Institute on February 28th. This offers an opportunity for potential volunteers to become involved and also for local clubs to promote opportunities.

Sports Clubs have a great opportunity to advertise for new volunteers to develop new ideas within their club structure within this programme. Sports makers could be come involved within coaching, promotional activities, website creation or helping to create new facilities at the club. If any clubs would be keen to hear about the programme and would like to promote opportunities they need to contact Richard Munson of the Humber Sports Partnership on 01482 387491 rmunson@goodwin-centre.org

Local Netball Volunteer Jennie Simmons, 19, has signed up for Sport Makers initiative to become involved in a range of sports. “Sport Makers enables you to become involved within a number of sports and you could help out in different ways such as helping the coaches at one club to creating a website to promote another sport. It is a nice feeling being involved at a club as you feel part of a family and players are able to develop from a friendly supportive environment. Voluntary work is also something you can add to your CV as well so it can be good for both your social life and career”

Gary HoodDirector of the Humber Sports Partnership said “Sports Makers is an inspirational national scheme that will help to support clubs and major events in the Humberover the coming years. This will be part of the Olympic legacy that makes a difference to local people. The Humber Sports Partnership has a lot of partners who are on board with the program, including professional clubs, colleges, business and Local Authorities. The real benefactors will be the Sports Makers themselves as they assist our local clubs to become stronger and our sporting communities have fun and succeed. The experience of becoming a Sports Maker is as exciting and rewarding as helping our community clubs to thrive and grow.”

Five-time Olympic Gold medalist, Sir Steve Redgrave is a supporter of the national project.

Sir Steve said: “You don’t need medals to become a sporting hero. By helping people you know to get involved in sport you’ll be doing something amazing for your friends and local community as well as having fun yourself.

“The thing I want to see more than anything is more people out enjoying what sport has to offer, but we need your help to make it happen.”

It is easy to get involved in the project. Potential volunteers just need to register at www.sportmakers.co.uk and the Humber Sports Partnership will be able assist you from here.

Amateur sportsmen and women in Hull and East Yorkshire are being offered free injury prevention and treatment advice from leading sports physiotherapist, as part of an initiative to reduce the burden on hospital A&E departments in the region.

The Sports Injury and Prevention seminar for Hull and East Riding is being staged in the dressing rooms at the KC Stadium, which are normally home to the professional footballers of Hull City and the Super League stars of Hull FC.

The free seminar is open to all amateur sports clubs in the region and takes place next month (Thursday 22nd March 2012 from 6.30pm to 8pm).

The programme has been supported by NHS Hull with the aim of reducing the number of recreational and amateur sports people unnecessarily visiting A&E, when they sustain an injury while training or playing.

The session will be led by fully qualified Sports Physiotherapists and Rehabilitators who have previously worked with Super League clubs, Elite Yorkshire Academies and the Humberside Triathlon Team.

Topics to be covered are scheduled to include expert advice on injury prevention, how to manage injuries when they occur, common sports injuries and how mental health can affect your recovery progress and future prevention.

The organisers are health management specialists, Twist Solutions, and their Director Rob Fuller commented: “Sports Injury and Prevention is a programme designed to educate aspiring athletes and community sports groups about injury prevention and treatment.

”It’s part of a wider campaign, supported by NHS Hull, to reduce unnecessary referrals to A&E, when alternative treatment options can be more appropriate.”

Fuller added: “When an injury occurs, the first reaction is always to visit A&E, no matter how serious it might be. A&E Departments can be very overcrowded and it’s not always necessary to seek treatment exclusively from this source.

“This robust sports injury management programme, which includes an online 24-hour resource, will educate people about all support and treatment options available to them. It’s designed to help everyone associated with amateur sport make better-informed decisions.”

Anyone interested in reserving a space needs to do so in advance and should contact: Rob Fuller on 07877 235 231 or email admin@sportsinjuryandprevention.co.uk

There are only 30 spaces available, so we recommend you secure your place early. To find out more about the programme visit www.sportsinjuryandprevention.co.uk or join Facebook.com/Sportsinjuryandprevention

Sky Ride Local led bike rides are organised by British Cycling in partnership with North Lincolnshire Council and NHS North Lincolnshire and supported by Sky as part of their National Sky Ride campaign to get 1 million more people in the UK riding their bikes.

Sky Ride Local is all about helping a community to embrace bike riding, to explore their local area and meet like-minded people. There will be 10 Sky Rides delivered across North Lincolnshire in the months of June and July.

We need cycle leaders to be part of Sky Ride North Lincolnshire and are looking for local people with a passion for cycling. If this is you, you could become a Sky Ride leader and help us deliver the programme and future social led rides across North Lincolnshire. Whether you want to ride 2 miles or 20 miles, it doesn’t matter as long as you can encourage people to get on their bikes and have fun.

This fixture was the second CLV event held in the 2011-12 session. The Stringers had been training hard for several weeks in preparation for this fixture, as in the last 3 years they had unfortunately near won a match.

Anticipation was high as the first game saw the Hull Stingers taking on a young but strong side from the Celtic Warriors. It was a nervous start from both teams, it was not until towards the end of 2nd quarter that the Stingers momentum started to show, moving out into a 9 to 4 lead but as the half closed the Warriors came back to within 1 point.

The 3rd quarter was very tense and exciting, however shots were not going in for either side, supporter were going wild, the atmosphere was fantastic.

Into the last quarter and the Warriors took the lead for the first time, that spurred the Stingers into action, they fort for every loose ball and defended brilliantly. There were several opportunities for the Warriors to take control of the game but their free throws were off target.

Minutes remained in the game, the Stingers players could sense their first victory, in over 3 years of completive play. As the clock ticked down, nerves were evident from both the players, spectators and family supporters who were screaming encouragement from the gallery.

As the clock moved into the last minute a “time out” allowed the Stingers coach to give last minute instructions, the game restarted and as the ball came into the position of the Stringers for the last time, time expired.

A Win for the Hull Stringers for the first time in a competitive match, it was evident it meant so much to all players and team management and supporters alike. The Warriors put on a great effort and lost by a slimmest of margins, both teams had a magnificent game.

The final score was 15 points to Hull Stingers, 12 points to Celtic Warriors. The Coach for the Hull Stingers Adrian Kennedy was quoted as saying ” It was a hard won match, the team demonstrated how good teamwork and practice can pay off, well done to everyone involved players and supporters”.
